Spot-winged Wood Quail Odontophorus capueira
There is no evidence to suggest that the two subspecies (O. c. capueira and O. c. plumbeicollis) meet the 75% rule of subspecies. Hellmayr & Conover (1942) noted that O. c. plumbeicollis was exceedingly close to O. c. capueira, but differed by having the foreneck and throat vermiculated with blackish (instead of plain grey), the breast tinged with pale buffy brownish, the rufous frontal band and superciliaries somewhat narrower, and the hind neck almost devoid of light markings. However, this was based on a single (type) specimen which was in rather poor condition. Hellmayr & Conover (1942) stated that the validity of O. c. plumbeicollis needs corroboration by additional material. To our knowledge, no such comparisons have been made, and we believe it is better to treat O. c. plumbeicollis as a synonym of Odontophorus capueira, pending detailed study of geographic variation in this species. Consequently, Odontophorus capueira becomes a monotypic species.
