Lesser Moorhen Gallinula angulata
A phylogenetic study based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences has shown that the genus Gallinula as traditionally circumscribed is not monophyletic, and consists of at least four major lineages or clades (García-R et al. 2014a, see also Sangster et al. 2015b). Lesser Moorhen G. angulata was found to be sister to Gallinula and Fulica. Lesser Moorhen is therefore best placed in the monotypic genus Paragallinula (Sangster et al. 2015b). Consequently, the scientific name of Lesser Moorhen becomes Paragallinula angulata. In a linear sequence of genera, Paragallinula is listed before Gallinula and Fulica.
